We are excited to announce that we are launching The JCB Academy Combined Cadet Force (CCF) in September. This initiative is part of the Governments Cadet Expansion Programme, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and Department of Education. As part of the wider military family, The JCB Academy’s CCF contingent will offer our learners a broad range of challenging, exciting, adventurous and educational activities. The aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Joining the CCF is entirely voluntary and cadets will not be expected to pursue a military career, although if this is something that learners are considering, it is a fantastic first step.

Our Combined Cadet Force will be an Army section affiliated with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). REME embodies the ethos of the soldier/tradesman. As a part of a Corps forged on the battlefield, they keep the punch in the Army’s fist. REME is built upon innovation, meeting the twin requirements of military proficiency and engineering skill, supporting every unit in the British Army.

The CCF will be a Wednesday afternoon Extension Activity option for the duration of the year. Weekly training in the first year will give cadets a firm military foundation based on weapon training, shooting, field-craft, shelter construction, navigation skills, first aid and drill. The training will be delivered by the Contingent Commander (Mr Morgan), the Cadet Training Team, and staff of The JCB Academy that hold the Queen’s Commission as CCF Officers (Mr Handley, Mrs Newman and Miss Buchanan). We have recently appointed an ex-sniper instructor as out School Staff Instructor so competitive shooting will be a big part of what we offer.

There will also be opportunities for cadets to participate in competitions, courses and adventurous activities. These range from leadership and military courses, through to adventurous training and even overseas trips. Cadets will have the opportunity to take part in obstacle courses, field-days, expeditions, as well as activities like climbing, kayaking and mountain biking. Many CCF cadets will also participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, being able to use some aspects of their CCF service to satisfy certain award requirements.

Applications for the Combined Cadet Force have now closed. 60 learners applied and were interviewed in May and 30 learners have been successful in securing a place.

Joining The JCB Academy’s Combined Cadet Force costs £65 for the year. This cost includes a full set of uniform (including boots) as well as field equipment for field days and expeditions and access to all training equipment. The cost also covers membership and insurance as well as the cost of any field days and night expeditions.

The focus and highlight of the year for our contingent will be participation in the annual summer camp. This all-inclusive one week camp will cost £60 and runs during our Activities Week next July.

Come and have a different golfing experience and improve your game. How many schools offer the chance to improve your handicap whilst at school?
In the ‘good’ weather, we will go to: www.manorgolfclub.net and play as many holes in the time we have there.
In the winter, we will go to: www.belmontgolf.co.uk and (if the weather permits) try to get the nine holes played (time permitting). Or have a few baskets of balls to hone our swing. I have also devised a driving and chipping scenario to try to simulate an eighteen-hole course. With your help, we can try that out with the scope of improving it.
